the term masterpiece should be reserved for items like these; an absolute tank of a coat from y's for men a/w 03. a contemporary interpretation of the iconic french military motorcycle coat with no compromises in construction, quality, and detail. apart from its exceptional build, what really elevates this item for me is its fantastic depth of color that has been achieved through a garment dye process for a lived-in look and touch. the dye has faded to differing degrees throughout, bringing forth a dynamic range of khakis, browns, and greens for a truly one-of-a-kind atmosphere. recommended for sizes medium and up.
for a few years beginning with the a/w 03 season, y's for men collections were presented on the paris runway along with mainline pour homme collections. this season featured looks with a strong military edge in heavy woolens and robust cottons processed with special dye and fulling treatments. it is during this time that the line began to state its presence as the "true" manifestation of the yohji yamamoto menswear ethos, and not simply a "diffusion" or "secondary" line as it is often mistaken for. items during this era are characterized by an emphasis on materiality, special treatment / dye procedures, and elaborate construction / details. while not specifically featured on the runway, you can see a similar military coat from the same series of products in a blue here (look 16).

- while there is a sense of wear throughout, i feel that it adds to the atmosphere of the garment - black oil stain near back vent (see pic), which adds to the authentic feeling of vintage motorcycle coats, leaving one to wonder if it had been worn by a previous owner while riding ;) - damaged inner backing button at top, missing one at bottom, does not impede function and invisible when worn - slight irregularity in fabric weave near back right near the belted waist (see pic)
